Summary Statement:
In the 1920's racial and nativism tensions were rising with the number of immigrants coming to America. Also there was very little sympathy for immigrants.
Summary Statement:
Since there were so many immigrating to the United States, this led to more Nativism and extreme Racism, like Sacco and Vanzetti's trial as well as the Ku Klux Klan.
Summary Statement: The significantly increasing immigration to America from South-European countries caused many anti-foreign feelings for Americans. These were reflected by the events in the 1920's such as the Sacco-Vanzetti trial, the re-emergence of KKK, and laws restricting immgration.
  • Emergency Quota Act-limited amount of immigrants allowed to enter America to 3%of the number of immigrants already in the U.S. to each country.
  • Number of immigrants increased by 400,000 from 1920-1921.
  • Sacco and Vanzetti-2 Italian immigrants that were anarchists that were found guilty of a crime because of their immigrant background and political beliefs.
  • Ku Klux Klan(KKK)- Only nativism born white Protestants could be members. They protected their ideals of American life from Afrcan Americans, Roman Catholic, Jewish and immigrant "corruption".
  • William J. Simmons- A former preacher established the KKK in 1915 against forigners as well as African Americans.

  • Immigration increased from 110,000 in 1919 to 430,000 in 1920, to 800,000 in 1921.
  • Emergency Quota Act of 1921 - number of immigrants from a country allowed to enter US was restricted only 3% of immigrants living in US from census of 1910 - later adjusted to census of 1890 when fewer South European immigrants were there
  • Sacco-Vanzetti case - 2 Italian immigrants and known atheists and anarchists accused of killing a paymaster and a guard in a shoe factory robbery, notorious trial followed, eventually executed on August 23, 1927
  • Re-emergence of KKK, focused more against foreigners rather than blacks. Established by William J. Simmons a preacher, called America's "melting pot" a "garbage can." KKKmembership grew to 5 million in 1923. KKK's member support in midwest and SOuth but also had membership all over America.
  • KKK declined in late 1920's when internal power struggles and money laundering was accused. Lost many members when David C. Stephenson convicted of assault and death of a young women. America recoiled from Klan's hateful messages and the violence of their actions.
